Podcasting & Podagogy : Tools, Projects and Good Practice




Overview


During week four, we will be taking a look at how podcasting is currently being used in language education, as well as sharing thoughts about good practice. We will also be evaluating automatic podcasting solutions, looking at DIY solutions, and also discussing the best ways of starting a podcasting project with/for students or teachers.

a) Sharing Good Practice

  • Post a short message to our Yahoo Group about your experience of using podcasts with students or colleagues. How do you find podcasts to use with students? How did the students take to the podcasts? What podcasts have been most interesting to you? Have you ever created your own podcast? How did you go about it? Do you have any tips for those who are just about to start?
  • Join the ELT Podcasting Wiki (http://pod-efl.wikispaces.com) and add information about your podcasting projects to the participant pages. We hope this wiki will become a useful resource for language education podcasting projects in the future.
  • Take a look at some of the suggested readings / listenings (listed at the bottom of this page) and comment upon them in your blog.
  • Add your ideas to the wiki page: '99 ways to use a podcast' for language learning & teaching
  • Start a Gigadial account (http://www.gigadial.com) and set up a channel to record your podcast recommendations. Add a link to your channel to your blog. More about gigadial and how it can be useful can be found here: Gigadial

b) Trying out the Tools - podcatching software and podcast directories


  • Download or sign up for an account using different podcatching software and compare this to what you have been using by writing a post on your blog (or recording a podcast). If your usual podcatching software isn't listed, then please add it to the list.
  • Try looking for some new podcasts to add to your new software by using some of the podcasts in our ELT podcast directory, and in other podcasting directories . If you know of any other directories,or find an interesting podcast not listed in our wiki then please add to our list.

c) Trying Out the Tools - automatic podcasting solutions


  • Look at the Podcasting Tools Evaluation wiki page and add any relevant notes/links to resources to the comparative table about automatic podcasting solutions.
  • Try one or two of the automatic podcasting tools that you are unfamiliar with - open accounts with Podomatic, Odeo, Evoca, etc. and experiment with creating an audio/video podcast at these places. If you want help with any of these, or if you have any doubts, check the Week 4 Tutorials / FAQ page first before sending a question to the Yahoo Group.
  • Link to these podcasts on your blog and share your findings by writing (or recording and linking to) a post on your blog. State any problems you may have had and tell us about your first impressions of these tools.

d) Trying out the Tools - DIY podcasting (optional)


Please note: automatic podcasting solutions are fine for a lot of educational projects, and take a lot of the work out of podcasting. If however, you need to or would like to know about other ways to podcast (and you have the time!), then this is for you. See the Week 4 FAQ for reasons why the automatic podcasting solutions may be insufficient for some people.
  • Recording & Audio Editing: Download the free audio editing software Audacity and learn how to use it by recording and editing a short podcast. Make sure you also download the add-on Lame encoder (this allows you to save to mp3). Note: there is a videotutorial on Audacity in the Tutorials / FAQ page section for this week.
  • Edit the ID3 tags of the mp3 file. See the Week 4 FAQ for more details.
  • File Storage: Upload the file to your own server space (if you have any), or sign up for a free account at http://www.ourmedia.org/ and save the file there.
  • Set up a podcast-friendly RSS feed using feedburner (http://www.feedburner.com) and put a link to your new feed in the blog you'll be using to podcast from.
  • Promote your podcast : submit the podcast to iTunes, and other podcast directories (if this is appropriate).

d) Starting a Podcast Project


  • Before embarking on a podcast project, take a look at the Podcast Project Planning page and answer the questions in your blog. Take a look at some of the replies that other participants have already posted in their blogs
  • Decide if you want to do your podcast alone, or start a joint podcast with another EVO participant. There may also be an opportunity for an international student podcast exchange if this is appropriate to your plan. You can mention your ideas in the Yahoo Group and/or on your blog.
  • Ask for feedback on your project, revise your ideas accordingly and decide when you want to start. Help other participants by reading their project plans and by giving feedback.

Discussion

Based on your prior experience, the suggested reading/listening (below), and what you have learned this week, discuss the possibilities that podcasting offers you and your students. Use your blog and podcast to do this, and also comment on what other people write in their blogs and say in their podcasts:

  • What opportunities do you see podcasting being able to offer you in your educational setting?
  • How effectively do you think you can engage students with something like a podcast?
  • What (if any) problems can you foresee that may result in your podcast project not becoming a success? What can you do to avoid them?


Round Table


Our first podcasting round table discussion will take place on Saturday February 10th. (see above) We have invited a number of special guests who are educators involved in podcasting. There will also be time for you to participate and to ask questions to the guests, as well as telling us about the podcasting projects you are involved in.
