Some ideas to use Web 2.0 technologies for research and publications:

  • Make a Flickr set for research screen shots aside from personal photos and offer a direct link to that subdirectory.
  • In publishing a paper where space is limited, hybridize the article with the same metadata tag such as "paper1" (in addition to tags descriptive of the content) in -- for the reader to click to read the online references and perhaps more related online articles -- and Flickr -- for the reader to view related screen shots, such as of password-protected virtual learning environments, which can be viewed as a slide show. The two URLs in this case can be provided to the reader in the paper, while the tags are also searchable through the and Flickr homepages, Technorati or search engines.
  • Along with the podcasting wave, Odeo offers an interesting voice message service where anyone can plug a microphone into their computer and Send me a Message. It could be used to receive spoken homework or otherwise to analyze L2 speech samples.
  • The Google Docs & Spreadsheets (formerly Writely) online word-processor has some intriguing possible uses, such as automatically converting e-mail attachments to HTML files, exporting files in PDF format, gathering students' papers, collaborating on papers, or simply turning word-processed documents with images into public Web pages hosted at the Writely site, as in this example with photos of active World Association for Online Education members: Writely portraying WAOE people.
